Breaking: Kazakhstan Renews Landmark Education Deal with Coursera

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has renewed its strategic partnership with global online learning platform Coursera, solidifying for-credit world-class learning as a core pillar of the nation’s higher education and workforce development strategies, officials announced today.

The renewed agreement will continue to equip tens of thousands of students across Kazakhstan with critical human, digital, business, and artificial intelligence (AI) skills. Students will earn official ECTS credits and industry-recognized certifications in fields like Data Science, Cybersecurity, AI, Engineering, and Finance.

“This partnership is a cornerstone of our efforts to modernize higher education and prepare every Kazakhstani graduate for the global digital economy,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. “By integrating Coursera’s for-credit courses, we are directly linking curriculum to careers.”

Background: A Proven Partnership Since 2022

Coursera has been a strategic skills development partner for Kazakhstan since 2022. To date, the collaboration has supported over 235,000 students across more than 100 Kazakhstani universities, with over 500,000 certificates earned.

The initiative originally aimed to bridge the gap between academic curricula and real-world job requirements. The renewal deepens this commitment by expanding access to 13,500 courses from over 375 leading companies and universities globally.

“The speed of digital transformation is radically reshaping the labor market, and universities must rethink how their offerings connect curricula to careers,” a Coursera spokesperson said. “Kazakhstan is leading the way in institutionalizing this approach.”

What This Means for Kazakhstan’s Education System

Modernized Curricula and For-Credit Learning

Kazakh universities can now allow students to take Coursera courses for official, transferable ECTS credits. This means students earn degree credit while gaining job-relevant certifications, directly modernizing higher education curricula.

Universal AI Literacy via AI-Sana Initiative

A key component is equipping all Kazakhstani students with foundational AI knowledge. Through access to introductory courses like Google AI Essentials and advanced content such as Building with the Claude API from Anthropic, the partnership supports the national AI-Sana initiative.

“AI literacy is now a foundational skillset for all graduates, irrespective of field,” the Ministry official emphasized. “AI-Sana ensures every graduate enters the workforce with a practical understanding of Generative AI and Digital Ethics.”

Over 1,100 GenAI courses are now available, giving Kazakhstan one of the most comprehensive AI education programs in Central Asia.

Promoting the Kazakh Language in Online Education

To overcome language barriers, more than 4,000 courses on priority topics—including AI, data science, machine learning, and cybersecurity—have been translated into Kazakh. This ensures world-class education is accessible in the national language.

Looking Ahead

The renewed partnership is expected to accelerate Kazakhstan’s goal of becoming a regional hub for digital talent. The Ministry plans to expand the number of for-credit pathways and deepen integration with national workforce development programs.

“By institutionalizing access to Coursera, we are future-proofing our education system,” the Ministry official concluded. “This is just the beginning.”
